How to Attract Great Followers

Leading Penguins FollowingWhy do people follow you? Obligation? Ignorance? Fear? The answer is important because it drives what type of performer they’ll be.

The most powerful followers are those that trust in their leader. These are the followers you want – they aren’t just cogs, they’re active participants who willingly offer the best of their knowledge, talents and creativity.

That’s why building trust is crucial as a leader. Trust is the currency of your leadership: The more you have, the more influence you have – the less you have, the less influence you have. It’s that simple.

So how do you build trust?

1. Trust Yourself. You can’t expect others to trust you if you don’t even trust yourself. This is always the first step for a leader – a step that must be taken every day. You are where you are for a reason and your whole life has led you to this moment. Trust who you are, what you know, and what you can do.

2. Be Transparent. True honesty comes as a result of trusting yourself. Many leaders fear showing weakness or awkwardness in front of their followers. But this transparency is what people connect with – it makes you human, approachable, and real. People are always drawn to what’s authentic.

3. Put Others First. Our default as humans is to think about ourselves. That’s why putting the needs of others ahead of your own can be so difficult – and so powerful. When you sincerely make someone a priority they feel it, appreciate it, and trust you.
